When we started our business, we decided to make a commitment to the community, to sustainability, and to providing good jobs.  For example, we work with the local Lions Club to provide exams and glasses for those in need.  Also, Dr. Kim has volunteered at a local elementary school.  She visited with the students in the “Glasses Club” to explain the importance of wearing their prescriptions, and spent time repairing their glasses too.  Similarly, we have continued to support the UCSC chapter of Global Medical Brigades through fundraisers, since it’s inception.

Furthermore, when we built our office, we used recycled, reused, and green materials when possible.  Our furniture was was made by Berkeley Mills, The Wooden Duck, and The Habitats Collection.  All three businesses use FSC certified and reclaimed wood in  their  designs.

Similarly, Greenspace provided our flooring.  It consists of sustainably harvested cork and bamboo.  We also used soy-based stains and sealers to finish the exposed concrete foundation. Our lab cabinets were previously part of a circa 1960s kitchen, and the floor tiles are  made from used tires.   Finally, the interior doors, many of our fixtures, and even sinks were rediscovered at Urban Ore in Berkeley.

Likewise, when choosing eyeglasses manufacturers, we searched for companies that share similar values.  Quite a bit of hand work is required to finish eyeglass frames. Thus, we looked for ones that are produced in countries that support fair labor. We try to emphasize glasses made in France, Japan, and Italy.  Additionally, our readers are made from recycled plastic, while other frames incorporate natural materials like cruelty-free horn and wood. We also carry antique frames. They are refurbished and some have lasted 50 years or more.

Finally, we have been certified as a green business by the Monterey Bay Green Business Program.  We also donate 1% of our gross sales to local non-profit groups.  Likewise, as members of Think Local First, we work with other Santa Cruz business to provide eye care for their employees.  We also try to provide affordable exams, glasses, and contacts to students.
